Reading:
Statement of intent
At Woodley CofE, we believe that reading is one of the most important skills that we teach to our children so that they will be able to fulfill our vision of becoming life-long learners. Our intent is for children to learn to read quickly and effectively so that they can access learning in all areas of the curriculum. We aim for the children to become fluent, confident readers who enjoy reading for pleasure and a variety of purposes. We recognise the important role that parents play in the teaching of reading and their crucial role in ensuring the children become life-long learners. Our intent is further strengthened by our School Objectives that detail the characteristics of effective readers. These are as follows:
• Excellent phonic knowledge and skills.
• Fluency and accuracy in reading across a wide range of contexts throughout the curriculum.
• Knowledge of an extensive and rich vocabulary.
• An excellent comprehension of texts.
• The motivation to read for both study and for pleasure.
• Extensive knowledge through having read a rich and varied range of texts.
